Michael Morse has been one of the hottest players in baseball and is off to the best start of anyone on the Seattle Mariners, but all of that will take a break as the outfielder broke his finger on Thursday against the Rangers and could miss a week of action.
According to ESPN.com, Morse suffered a small fracture in his right hand and will be out for up to a week, but he will not be put on the DL. The report says that Morse was hurt in the seventh inning against Texas after getting hit on the hand by a pitch and after he was hit in the shoulder following the other check swing, he was taken out of the game.
Manager Eric Wedge said that he could be back by Sunday and the Mainers need him, as he is tied for the league lead in home runs with six. The long ball is something the Mariners lack and Morse has been one of the early surprises of the season. He joins Michael Saunders as another injured Mariner, but his shoulder injury required a DL stint.
"I definitely thought something was wrong," Saunders said Thursday. "However, out of a bad situation this was the best case and the best outcome that could have happened."
Former Mariners pitcher Jamie Moyer threw out the first pitch at the home opener for the team and while he is 50-years-old, he did not rule out a possible comeback after being the oldest pitcher to ever win a game. He said he did not close the door on a comeback and said he could continue the career that began with the Cubs in 1986.
Moyer went 2-5 with a 5.70 earned-run average in 10 starts last season with the Rockies and he now has 269 career wins after pitching well into his 40s.
"If I did it, it would be in a respectful way," Moyer said. "It's not a dog and pony show and I said the same thing last year when I was with Colorado. I'm not doing it for publicity. It's because I wanted to try to play and because I think I can play. And that's what I'm trying to figure out right now. If that's the appropriate way to go or not."
