At Upton Park, West Ham started the brighter side, with Andy Carroll a constant menace to the United defenders.
The home side deservedly took the lead in the 16th minute. Mohamed Diame ran from West Ham's own half, after Wayne Rooney gave the ball away, before giving passing to Matt Jarvis on the left. The winger left Rio Ferdinand for dead before standing a ball up to the far post for Carroll to head down. Vaz Te reacted quickest, guiding his own header from six yards.
United are not 13 points in the lead for nothing, and even when they are not at their best, they find a way to eke out results. The equalizer came when Van Persie charged down the left, before playing a nice pass to Shinji Kagawa, who then laid the ball on a plate for Valencia to execute a simple tap-in.
Carroll's physical approach was questioned by Sir Alex Ferguson, when the on-loan striker clattered into goalkeeper David De Gea right on the stroke of halftime.
Phil Jones missed a sitter early in the second half to give United the lead, before Diame struck n 55 minutes. Guy Demel played the ball to Diame just outside the box, with the midfielder moving past Rooney, before smashing the ball into the back of the net with his left foot.
United, however, are masters of the late goal and Van Persie scored in the 77th minute, latching onto a rebound after Kagawa's nice strike struck both the posts before falling to the feet of the Dutchman, although there were some suspicions of offside.
At the Etihad, in a dress-rehearsal for the F.A. Cup final, it took a moment of brilliance from Carlos Tevez to see City cut the gap on United to 13 points, having played a game less.
The Argentine forward ran past three Wigan defenders before firing the ball into the top corner in the 83rd minute. Wigan, with the loss, remain in the bottom three, three points adrift of safety, albeit with a game in hand.
At Craven Cottage, David Luiz sent Chelsea on their way with a sublime strike from 30 yards, before a double from skipper John Terry moved the Blues to third in the table, one point ahead of Arsenal, after an easy 3-0 win over West London rivals Fulham.
