The Chicago Cubs have gotten off to a tough start for the second straight season and Theo Epstein's team is hoping to turn things around as they travel to Great American Ball Park on Monday night for a division rivalry series game against the Cincinnati Reds.
Travis Wood will be on the mound for the Cubs against Mike Leake and the team will be looking to keep Joey Votto's back quiet after he started to break out of his early season slump, hitting home runs in the past two games. The Reds have gotten off to a solid start after winning the division last season and Votto is appearing to get back to his power hitting ways after not smacking a long ball for the first 17 games of the season and he is now hitting .328 after going seven for 11 over the past two games, while Shin-Soo Choo has been killing it while leading the majors in on-base percentage. The team is 11-8 on the year and Dusty Baker is hoping some home games can help get things going consistently.
The Cubs are hoping for any type of consistency and they will try to keep Jay Bruce down, as he has started off the season with zero home runs so far along with 26 strikeouts, a much higher rate than last year. Last season he had a breakout year with 34 home runs and nearly 100 RBIs and he will need to get going for the Reds to be successful. Bruce has mashed at home in his career against the Cubs and last season in six games he hit .381 with a home run and he will try to do the same on Monday against Wood.
Leake went 0-1 in three starts against the Cubs last year on the road at Wrigley and now he will get back to a park he does well at against Chicago, as he is 3-0 in four tries against the Cubbies. The Reds have gone 10-3 at home so far this season and will try keep up that play on Tuesday. The team is ranked first in the league in scoring and on base percentage behind Choo and the Reds is also fifth in batting average and 11th in slugging. The Cubs are struggling at 5-12 and are 28th in runs and 27th in both batting average and on base percentage while 16th in slugging on the season.
