David Ortiz has been accused of steroid use in the past, but this time the Boston Red Sox star feels the accusations are off base after an article from Boston Globe reporter Dan Shaugnessy suggested that he is using PEDs.
According to ESPN.com, Ortiz was upset at the report, which linked his strong start to the season to PED use and steroids, saying that he was "hurt" by it and that sometimes he has good April starts and sometimes he has bad ones. The 37-year-old spoke about the story and said to ESPN that he has never thought about using PEDs to aid his game, no matter how old he gets. This season Ortiz had a long hitting streak and has started with a .381 average with four home runs and 17 RBIs.
The Red Sox have been off to a good start as well and the article cites hi age as well as his past link to steroids, which happened in 2009 when the NY Times reported that he tested positive during the 2003 season, which Ortiz blamed on a combo of legal supplements and vitamins. Shaugnessy mentioned chants from fans in the stands of "steroids" to Ortiz and also cited the fact that he is getting better as he gets older.
"I have bad Aprils [and] they bury me, or some reporter buries me because of that," Ortiz said. "I have a good April [and] it's bad, too."
