Andrew Wiggins made one of the biggest decisions of his life on Tuesday, as the number one recruit signed a letter of intent with the Kansas Jayhawks after debating between them, Florida State, Kentucky and North Carolina.
According to ESPN.com, Wiggins made his selection at a private ceremony in Huntington in West Virginia and he will head to the school from Huntington Prep, where he averaged 23.6 points, 11.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists. Wiggins previously grew up in Toronto and was named Naismith High School player of the year this past season and now he has the chance to move to the next stage of his career.
Wiggins follows in the footsteps of names like Avery Bradley, Brandon Jennings, Anthony Davis and Nerlens Noel as the number one ranked prospect by ESPN and he has solid athletic genes, as his mother was a track and field star for Canada and won two silver medals, while his father Mitchell Wiggins played in the NBA at Florida State, which is why Wiggins was considering that school. Kansas' Bill Self played a big part in the recruitment and Wiggins felt it was the best place for him to start his college basketball career.
Wiggins had until the Wednesday deadline to sign and one reason he may have picked Kansas was due to the crazy media attention during the process and things with the Jayhawks can be less intense than in other cities despite the fervor for the team. At first Wiggins was part of the 2014 class, but after he decided to reclassify he became the top recruit. Kansas now has a stekllar class of prospects with Wayne Selden, Conner Frankamp, Brannen Greene and Frank Mason also heading to the school.
"I don't know that he's got to change anything," Rob Fulford, the head coach at Huntington Prep,
said Monday. "He's wired to score and I think that's what he'll do. He's going to continue to be who he is.
