Arsenal Transfer News: David Villa Competition From Spurs as North London Rivals Make Bid for Barcelona Striker

Arsenal are in serious danger of missing out on Barcelona forward David Villa, with Tottenham making an official bid for the player in view to a transfer in the summer.

The Gunners were heavily linked with Villa in the January transfer window, but a move could not be made due to the fact that Barcelona were unwilling to sell midway through the season.

Arsene Wenger has plenty of money to spend in the summer transfer window, and several reports have suggested that the manager is looking at other options up front, with the likes of Stevan Jovetic of Fiorentina and Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain heavily linked with a move.

Spurs have now moved ahead of Arsenal, making a £10 million bid, according to several reports in Spain.

Andre Villas-Boas is desperate to freshen up his forward line and reportedly met Villa personally to convince the player to join Tottenham in the summer.

Villa has reportedly given the nod over a move, but the move will hinge on Champions League qualification for next season.

Arsenal are currently favorites to qualify for Europe's elite competition next season, with the future in their own hands.

The Gunners hold a one point lead over Spurs going into the final day of the season Sunday. Arsenal are at Newcastle and will seal a top-four place with a win, with Spurs hosting Sunderland at White Hart Lane.

Villa has not had the best of seasons for Barcelona this season, and still does not seem to have fully recovered from the serious injury he suffered in 2011.

Barcelona are willing to let the forward go in the summer, and it remains to be seen which North London club eventually ends up signing the 31-year-old, although there are various other suitors for the Spanish international's signature as well.

Wenger has his sights set on Jovetic and Higuain, with reports suggesting the Gunners have sealed the deal for both players, with the move again subject to Champions League qualification.

It will be interesting to see which player moves to the Emirates in the summer, because it is highly unlikely that Arsenal will swoop for both, even if Jovetic is capable of playing across the forward line or in behind the striker.

Arsenal have also considered a move for Wayne Rooney, who has expressed his desire to leave Manchester United, but will struggle to match the striker's huge wage demands.
