Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger refuted reports of the club making a move for Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, while admitting they were closing in on another forward.
Following Rooney's decision to ask for a move away from Old Trafford, Arsenal have been one of a few number of clubs linked with the striker, with reports suggesting the North London side were preparing a £25 million ($38 million) move in the summer transfer window.
However, Wenger was quick to shoot down the reports, saying the club is only concentrating on their final English Premier League game of the season against Newcastle.
"At the moment we have no interest in anybody," he told reporters. "We have only one interest, which is of course Sunday's game.
"I don't know if Man United will sell Rooney and that is the best sign to show you we have not made any approach for him because the first move is to contact Manchester United, which we did not do.
"At the moment we are focused on Sunday."
Even if Arsenal were to make a bid for the striker, they will seriously struggle to match the player's wages, which is currently at around £250,000 a week ($380,000). Arsenal's highest earners at the moment are Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott, who make around £100,000 a week (151,000).
However, Wenger did admit the club were in advanced discussions over a move for Auxerre striker Yaya Sanogo, who is out of contract in the summer.
The 20-year-old was linked with a move in January, and now it seems like he will be Arsenal's first signing of the summer, although Wenger did admit the deal was not finalized.
"We are advanced with him, but it is not done," Wenger said. "I am very confident. He is a young striker who is promising, and has a big talent."
Arsenal are in on the lookout for an experienced striker in the summer transfer window, with the club linked with moves for Stevan Jovetic, Gonzalo Higuain and David Villa.
