Memorial Day weekend is one of the best sporting times on the schedule all year and this time around is no different as there are a number of huge events going on during the holiday time, including the running of the Indianapolis 500 as well as the start of the French Open, which will have Rafael Nadal as the favorite after how well he has played since coming back from his knee injury.
Nadal will get the chance to play against Novak Djokovic in the semifinals if both make it that far and Rafa will be looking to add his eighth title, while Djokovic will be looking for his elusive first one at the tournament. Nadal will have a tougher go of it due to his seed after being injured, but since he is such a good clay player he will be ready, while Serena Williams will be the favorite on the women's side with last years winner Maria Sharapova right behind. Williams is on a career best streak and she will be the main player at the tournament with Nadal.
Rafa will be looking to get back to a major final after missing the US Open and Australian Open after dealing with his knee issues. There won't be a championship rematch due to the seeding, but the semifinals will serve as a good match if both can make it there. Andy Murray won't be at the tournament after pulling out, while Juan Martin del Potro will also be missing from action. Williams has only won one French Open back in 2002 and she is playing her best tennis and wants to add another one to her mantle.
Williams has the chance to play against Angelique Kerber in the quarters, while Sharapova will matchup with Petra Kvitova as the tournament begins on Sunday. The weekend marks the beginning of the summer and there will be a number of big events going on, with the Indy 500 coming the same weekend as the NBA playoffs really heat up with the Miami Heat travelling to the City to play the Pacers, while the San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies will play game 3 as the Spurs are up 2-0. The UEFA Champions League final of Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayern Munich will go down over the weekend, while the NHL has a number of series that could wrap up, including the New York Ranger and Boston Bruins, who are now alive at 3-1 after winning in overtime. The Sharks and Kings are at 3-2 after LA won the last game, while the Penguins will get the chance to close out the Senators.
The MLS will have a full slate of action with team in Washington, Texas, Chicago Fire and Salt Lake in action, while Major League Baseball will be playing a ton of interesting series, including the Yankees travelling to Tampa Bay to play the Rays, Red Sox and Indians going at it, Reds and the Cubs, Brewers taking on the Pirates, Rockies battling the SF Giants in the west sun, while the O's and Blue Jays will also play. The Indy 500 is expected to be a historic day for the race and there will also be Monday games scheduled in hockey if necessary.
