PGA Leaderboard 2013: Matt Kuchar Wins Memorial Tournament Ahead Of U.S. Open Over Bill Haas As Tiger Woods Struggles Before Tour Schedule Hits Major Championship

Jun 02, 2013 06:23 PM EDT

The Memorial Tournament went into the final day on Sunday with defending champion Tiger Woods very low on the leaderboard and Matt Kuchar with the lead at eight under par after shooting a two under 70 on the day and Kuchar was able to hang on at 12 under over Kevin Chappel and Kyle Stanley with a four under par in the round to become the second multiple winner this season on the PGA Tour with Tiger Woods. Woods continued his rough play and finished at eight over after going even on Sunday a year after winning the tournament.

The weather didn't do the players any favors on Saturday and Kuchar was able to remain on top way ahead of Woods, who is tied for 69th in the tournament after shooting a 79 on the day that included a career high 44 on the back nine. Kuchar is on top with an eight under par through three rounds and he leads both Kevin Chappell and Kyle Stanley who are two shots behind at six under. Chappell had an excellent day on Saturday with a four under 68 while Stanley shot a 70 to stay in the mix at the top heading into the final day of play. Three players were tied for fourth at five under, with Matt Jones, Justin Rose and Saturday's leader Bill Haas, who shot a 76 after hitting three straight bogeys at the end of the round.

Woods came in as the defending champion and the Memorial did not turn out to be the US Open warm up that he was hoping for and now he will have to rally just to finish in the top half. Woods has had a fantastic year on tour while winning four times in his previous seven starts, including the Players Championship. Kuchar takes an eight under 208 into Sunday on a crowded leaderboard at the top, including Haas, who led after 36 holes. Kuchar was able to grab the lead early with two birdies on the first nine he played and after doing well on the par fives he finished at two under. Haas was tied for fourth on the leaderboard with Justin Rose, while Matt Jones was in play with a 70 at five under for fourth as well. Kuchar was able to jump into the lead with strong play early and he added two birdies early to keep himself in contention.

Rory McIlroy rebounded from some struggles earlier in the week and finished with a 75, while Bubba Watson finished at three under 213 and the weather could change up things on Sunday. Adam Scott and Charl Schwartzel, who was within one shot of the lead at one point, finished the day at four under and tied for seventh. Woods has never shot as bad at the course and although he said he felt good at times on the course, he couldn't get things to work for him. The last time Woods shot two rounds over par at the course was in the 90s and his worst finish was in 67th in 1997.
