Sabine Lisicki continues her great run after defeating Kaia Kanepi in straight sets. With the victory, Lisicki will now have a chance to compete in the Women's Singles semifinals at Wimbledon. She won by the final score of 6-3, 6-3.
With a running forehand to close out the match, Lisicki picked right where she left off in the fourth round after defeating the World's No. 1 ranked Serena Williams. She quickly took control of the game, taking a 2-0 lead in the first set. It wasn't the cleanest tennis, but Lisicki battled through nine forced errors in the first set, taking advantage of Kanepi's 13 unforced errors.
Kanepi, however, was not discouraged despite struggling in the first set. After Lisicki took a 1-0 lead in the second set, Kanepi bounced back to take a 2-1 lead in the set, her first lead in the match. However, Lisicki didn't take too long to get back into form. Using her booming serve, she kept Kanepi off balance, regaining her lead in the match by winning consecutive games.
With the score 3-2 in favor of Lisicki in the second set, Kanepi was unable to keep her game free of errors. She continuously whacked the ball straight into the net, missing open opportunities as the court was hers for the taking. Lisicki once again took advance of these opportunities given to her, winning four straight sets, taking a dominant 5-2 advantage.
Kanepi had trouble putting the eighth game of the second set away. Lisicki was down 0-40, but she quickly came right back, forcing a couple deuce twice. It almost seemed as though Lisicki wanted to close out the match on her own terms. She held her serve in the ninth game, despite Kanepi rallying back for a deuce, to close out the match, winning the game and for the second time in her career advancing to the semifinals at Wimbledon.
Lisicki will await an opponent between Na Li and Agnieszka Radwanska.
