Jenkins and Hernandez have known each other since high school and dated while he was attending the University of Florida and her sister was reportedly dating Lloyd when he was killed. Hernandez was arrested and charged with first degree murder for the crime and there are two other men in custody in connection with the shooting. Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace are considered accomplices to Hernandez in the crime and Jenkins was seen last at his bail hearing, after which he was denied bail for the second time.

The judge ruled that he was a flight risk due to the nature of the crime and he was also painted as the orchestrator, stemming from an incident at a nightclub. Hernandez was arrested and charged days after the body was found a mile from his home and it was reported that he met Lloyd two years ago, presumably through the sisters. ESPN.com reported that the four frequently went out together and other reports have said that the murder may have had to do with information Lloyd had about Hernandez's possible connection to a double murder in Boston from last summer.
As the investigation continued, more scrutiny was put on his past and Hernandez's time with the Florida Gators, which revealed a bar fight as well as a connection to a shooting. The team released the tight end after he was arrested and owner Robert Kraft said that he felt duped after the situation came to light. The team gave Hernandez a $40 million contract to him since he was looked at as one of the best young tight ends in the league, but now his career is likely over and he may face life in prison.
Hernandez was tied to the body through shell casings and other evidence, including video surveillance, text messages and cell phone locations. The Patriots offered jersey exchanges for anyone that came over the weekend and the next Madden game will no longer feature the star.
