President Barack Obama is a huge sports fan and that was very evident on Monday as the White House hosted a number of former baseball players who competed in the Negro League.
According to the Associated Press, President Obama invited a group of players to Washington DC on Monday and honored their contributions to American history and civil rights as well as the world of athletics. The White House often brings teams and players related to American sports and leagues for honors and official events and this time it included players from the Philadelphia Stars, New York Black Yankees, Indianapolis Clowns and Boston Blues from the Negro League.
The AP writes that the Negro League was one of thriving baseball leagues in the early 20th century and produced a number of all-time great players, including Jackie Robinson, who left to become the first African American in Major League Baseball, playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Although the league disbanded soon after he left, the mark on baseball and the history of the game can't be diminished.
