The Detroit Red Wings will honor one of the team's all-time great players this upcoming season, as the team will retire the jersey of former star Nicklas Lidstrom at a home game with a retirement ceremony.
According to the team website, the Red Wings announced that the team will retire Lidstrom's No. 5 jersey in March before playing the Colorado Avalanche and the team will honor Lidstrom's accomplishments. The defenseman was one of the most consistent players at his position and he won four Stanley Cups with the franchise and he also served as a captain for the team. Lidstrom retired last season with four championships to his name and he also took home seven Norris Trophy Awards, which are given to the top defenseman in the NHL.
Lidstrom served as captain before the 2006 season and when the team won the Stanley Cup over the Penguins in 2008. Lidstrom became the first European player captain to lead his team to a Stanley Cup victory and he retires with a number of team records and notable NHL accomplishments.
