The New England Patriots are without Aaron Hernandez this season as he is sitting in jail for the murder of Odin Lloyd and this week the case will be back in court, as the former tight end will be back for a probable cause hearing that was delayed back in July and it is unclear of his fiancé Shayanna Jenkins will be there.
Hernandez's probable cause hearing was rescheduled for August 22 on Thursday and now he will be in court for the first time since last month. The case will move along towards a trial at some point next year and investigators are still looking into whether Hernandez is connected to a double murder from last July. The gun in that murder was recently located after a traffic accident and now police are looking into whether Hernandez has any connections to that crime. All while this is going on, Hernandez's girlfriend Shayanna Jenkins is left alone to raise their child.
Jenkins was not beyond investigation as well, as she had a storage unit in her name searched by police last week. According to ESPN.com, police used text messages and video surveillance and an interview with her sister to determine that Jenkins may have tried to impede the investigation by hiding evidence, including possibly the murder weapon. Video showed her taking a bag from the house the day after the murder and placing it in her trunk and police said a "rigid object" was in the bag. She later returned with the trunk empty, after which police decided to search the unit.
Police did not take anything out of the unit and she has not been charged with any crime yet, but Jenkins will be a focus for police in the future of anything else comes up. The murder weapon in the Lloyd shooting has not been found yet and police have searched numerous areas, including a pond in Bristol, but nothing was found. The gun in the double murder was found after an accident with Jailene Diaz-Ramos, who had the gun in her car and said it was her boyfriend's.
That crime was a drive-by in Boston from last year of Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu, 29, and Safiro Teixeira Furtado, 28, who police say were shot from an SUV that had Rhode Island plates and was silver. A vehicle similar to that was seized from Hernandez's uncle's home and police are still looking for any connections in the case. Hernandez is in jail for first degree murder and he has pleaded not guilty to the charges and he could be facing life in prison.
