The NFL preseason is now through Week 3 for the most part and with many teams considering that to be the most important game on the schedule, it now is time for coaches and executives to start trimming down rosters, as the deadline to get to 75 players is Tuesday before the final preseason game.
After Tuesday's cut downs, teams will be mandated to get to 53 players next Saturday before the season begins and that will be interesting for many teams with known players on the fringe, including the New England Patriots with quarterback Tim Tebow. Many in the NFL have wondered whether or not he will get cut on Tuesday or before the 53-man roster is set and some teams have already started to release players ahead of the deadline.
According to Pro Football Talk, the Philadelphia Eagles released safety Kenny Phillips over the weekend after signing him in the offseason, making him a free agent once again. Philips dealt with an injury to his quad during summer workouts and head coach Chip Kelly decided to let go of the five-year veteran. Phillips previously spent his career with the NY Giants and signed with the Eagles in the offseason. Phillips will likely be linked back to New York after safety Stevie Brown went down in the third preseason game against the Jets with an ACL injury and now he will be lost for the season.
Brown was the top playmaker on defense for the Giants last season with eight interceptions and the tea might be leery or signing Phillips again, as the reason they let him go was his injury history. Phillips has eight interceptions in his career and he missed time over his five seasons with the Giants after dealing with knee injuries and he likely will be signed by someone soon.
Some well-known names include the Chiefs releasing quarterback Ricky Stanzi, while the Giants released Aaron Curry. The Giants signed Curry earlier in the offseason and the former number four overall pick had the chance to make the team at a position of need, but he couldn't move up the depth chart and the team will likely go with Dan Connor. Curry played in just 12 snaps in the game on Thursday night and now he will have to look somewhere else to continue his career after being released by the Seahawks.
