Urban Meyer Rumors: Aaron Hernandez Drug Tests, Assault and Shooting Covered Up? Florida Gators Head Coach Under Fire About Bar Fight and Drive-By

Aug 28, 2013 10:09 AM EDT

The Aaron Hernandez case involving the murder of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd has been the biggest story in the NFL this summer and offseason and now more details have come out in a Rolling Stone cover story that will hit newsstands this week, including that his old coach Urban Meyer may have helped cover up some incidents at Florida.

According to Rolling Stone, the article alleges that Meyer helped cover up drug tests that Aaron Hernandez failed while playing for the Florida Gators and also helped him out of two situations, including a bar assault and a shooting in Gainesville. These two events came to light earlier in the summer after more scrutiny into Hernandez' past and this is the first time that someone has come out to directly accuse Meyer of doing so. Meyer has come under fire for his time at Florida regarding Hernandez and now this news adds to what happened earlier in the summer.

While allusions have been made in the past about Meyer and how he handled Hernandez, this is the first time that someone has accused him of directly helping to cover things up. The article says that Meyer helped cover up failed drug tests as well as two different incidents, including a bar fight assault and a shooting in Gainesville. The article also alleges past drug use, that his mother married a drug dealer and that his family has criminal records.

Hernandez was arrested the week after Odin Lloyd's body was found less than a mile from his home in North Attleboro and now he is facing a trial next year most likely. Hernandez is facing life in prison after being charged with first degree murder and police arrested him after he previously was agitated with their questions about the case. The New England Patriots released him the day he was arrested and now his time with the team and in college has come under intense scrutiny.

Hernandez is accused of being the orchestrator of the murder and two other men in Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace have also been arrested in connection with the shooting. Meyer has been known as a hardnosed coach and while he has been accused of having some not so great characters on his teams, nothing like this has come up before, especially the Rolling Stone allegations. If Meyer covered things up that could be bad for him and for Florida and Hernandez is already dealing with possible connections to a double murder and separate shooting involving associate Alexander Bradley.
