The New York Giants are heading into the 2013 season with high expectations after missing the playoffs in 2012 after winning the Super Bowl the previous season and now the team is preparing to open up against the Dallas Cowboys and that means 53-man roster cuts, including names like Ramses Barden and Tyler Sash.
According to Pro Football Talk, Sash and Barden are two players that will be cut on Saturday before the 6 PM deadline to get to 53-man rosters and both are notable names that have been with the Giants for multiple years. Sash is a bit of a surprise since the Giants are dealing with injuries at safety, including with Stevie Brown being out for the year and Antrel Rolle dealing with an ankle and now Terrell Thomas may be forced to play more in that position and Ryan Mundy likely will be a starter after being signed as a free agent.
Brown is lost for the year with a knee injury and clearly the Giants feel okay about rookie Cooper Taylor and possible free agent options like Kenny Phillips, who was cut by the Eagles after leaving the Giants and they also will get Will Hill back after a four game suspension, making them more comfortable cutting Sash. Charles James at cornerback was also cut and some names that have surfaced as well include Barden, Matt McCants, Stephen Goodin as well as Matt Broha and David Caldwell. Barden had the size and ability to be a solid wideout option for the team, but he never could be consistent on the field and ended up with just 29 catches for 394 yards in his career.
The Giants have 22 total cuts to make to get to the deadline number and after playing the Jets they have a few decisions to make on injured players and other roster spots. The team will be without Brown for at least four to six weeks and the team could stick with what they have or they could go after Joe McKnight, who was cut by the Jets, or someone like Michael Turner or Willis McGahee, who was let go earlier in the offseason. The Giants are going to rely on David Wilson as their main starter in his second season and they are hoping he can be explosive.
