Robinson Cano Contract Rumors: Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers Options As NY Yankees 10-Year Deal Not Happening Says Steinbrenner

The New York Yankees are not in the postseason in 2013 and as their offseason is fast approaching with questions about Robinson Cano and manager Joe Girardi coming, Major League Baseball is looking into a situation regarding the free agent to be, as Los Angeles Dodgers owner Magic Johnson made some comments about the second baseman.

According to ESPN.com, Buster Olney reports that the MLB is looking into comments Johnson made about Cano, as the second baseman is not yet a free agent and teams are not allowed to make comments in public about players under contract to other teams. Johnson was asked about Cano by reporters and he made a quick comment about him, saying that while he couldn't talk about "that other guy in NY", he added that he was going to get "paid", although it wouldn't be "by us".

While it likely won't result in anything too harsh, the MLB doesn't like execs and owners talking about players that are still under contract and Cano can't become a free agent until he files for free agency after the playoffs. Cano is expected to be one of the top free agents on the market this offseason and many have wondered whether the Yankees will retain him and for how much if they do so.

Reports have said that Cano will be asking for $300 million over 10 years for his next contract and that could be troubling for the Yankees, as they may not want to deal with a contract of that length after what has been happening with Alex Rodriguez as he gets to the latter stages of his career. Cano is by far the most productive second baseman in the majors and he is the premier free agent on the mark this offseason. Cano hit over .315 with 27 home runs and 107 RBIs this season and he likely will be cashing in, with teams like the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, LA Angels, Yankees and Dodgers likely in the running.

The full quote from Johnsons was: "Though I can't talk about it, that other guy in New York is going to get paid," Johnson said. "Not by us, but he's going to get paid."
