It is Saturday, that means the kiddies and the family can stay up to watch Game 3 until the wee hours of the morning. Well, it will take that long, unless the action goes into extra innings. There has been no need for extra baseball in the 2013 World Series as both teams have taken leads into the ninth inning and secured them. In Game 2, it was the Cardinals holding on to a 4-2 lead as Trevor Rosenthal blew away the bottom half of the Red Sox's order, needing only 11 pitches to record the save.
The Cardinals' young pitching shined on Thursday evening. All of these kids were still in grade school when John Lackey, who started Game 2, won his World Series ring with the Los Angeles Angels in 2002. It was Michael Wacha, who is now 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA in his four career postseason starts, Carlos Martinez and Rosenthal who closed the door on the Red Sox in Game 2.
Aside from David Ortiz's opposite-field home run against Wacha, the Red Sox could not get any offense. Their hitters looked as helpless as the Cardinals' lineup in Game 1 of the World Series. The Red Sox's defense also struggled as they committed two costly errors in one play that gave the Cardinals the lead.
Game 3's starting pitching will feature more of the same seen in Game 2; the Red Sox will place the aged veteran on the mound, while the Cardinals will rely on another young pitcher to get them through at least the first six innings of the game. It will be Jake Peavy against Joe Kelly, both of whom lost their last starts in the LCS. Peavy was hammered for seven earned runs, while Kelly has only an 0-1 record to show in his three starts this postseason.
The Red Sox need a win in St. Louis to regain home field advantage. In 2004, they had no problem winning the series in St. Louis. However, they relied on a 2-0 series lead when playing Game 3 on the road. The Cardinals are 5-1 at home in the 2013 playoffs, proving home field advantage is really a plus.
