Here is a look back on some NFL free agents from the season and their chances of signing with teams in a little flashback look back on the 2013 season. The NFL schedule is now into Week 8 and with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and other teams like the Houston Texans and the St. Louis Rams dealing with injuries, some free agent options could include names like Michael Turner, Beanie Wells, Joe McKnight and Cedric Benson, especially if Doug Martin is seriously injured, as the Bucs will need a solid back to split carries going forward with Bobby Rainey and Mike James.
The running back position has plenty of names that could come in and contribute and after Willis McGahee signed with the Browns, Turner remains the top free agent option while names like Peyton Hillis, Tim Hightower and Joe McKnight could come in and be productive for teams struggling on offense with the running game. Turner was released by the Falcons earlier this year in a salary move and so far he has not had much interest on the market.
For teams dealing with injuries and issues at the running back position, Turner could be a solid option based on his past production, but teams are likely worried about the lack of interest. Turner was not very effective last season, rushing for his lowest total since joining the Falcons, gaining just 800 yards on the season after going for over 1,000 yards in three of his five years with the team. The last time he rushed for less than 900 yards was in 2009 while dealing with an injury and since playing in 11 games that year, he had not missed a game in three seasons.
The Falcons were not happy about his hit in production and after averaging over 4.0 yards per carry every year with the Falcons, he dropped to 3.6 last season. Turner's biggest advantage is his goal line skills, as he has double digit touchdowns in each of the past five seasons, including 10 last year despite his lack of production. For teams like the Giants, Steelers and others who have had redzone problems, he could be an interesting player to sign.
Teams may be scared off from Turner due to his age and production from last season, which gives players like McKnight, Hightower and Hillis the chance to get in on the action as well. Hillis has been trending down since rushing for a career high 1,177 yards a couple years ago with the Browns, but if a team gets desperate they could give him or McKnight a look. The Jets released McKnight after dealing with a number of issues, but he is a versatile back that can catch balls out of the backfield and he is a solid kick returner as well.
At the tight end position there is some solid talent, including Daniel Fells and Jake Ballard as well as Todd Heap, while the wideout position has names like Laurent Robinson, Braylon Edwards and Lavelle Hawkins available. The Titans are possibly looking at trading Kenny Britt, so that could be an option for teams lacking at that position, including someone like the Chargers or the 49ers. All these players could be factors come later in the season.
