The NY Giants have been very active in free agency this offseason, but TE remains a major hole and names like Owen Daniels, Dallas Clark, Jermichael Finley, Dustin Keller and Garrett Graham could be options to replace Brandon Myers over draft targets like Eric Ebron, Jace Amaro and Austin Seferian-Jenkins for Tom Coughlin and coordinator Ben McAdoo.
The Giants have not made the tight end a priority in free agency or the draft over the past few years after taking Jeremy Shockey many seasons ago, as they have shuffled through Jake Ballard, Bear Pascoe, Martellus Bennett and Brandon Myers and now they could look to make a major upgrade through the draft. The team has gotten solid production from those players over the years, but Myers was inconsistent last season and did not get on the same page as Eli Manning and that may lead the team to sign someone like Owen Daniels, Dallas Clark, Jermichael Finley or Dustin Keller.
According to ESPN.com, Finley has not yet been fully cleared for next season after he was injured last year with the Packers and he has also been linked with the Seattle Seahawks on the free agent market. The report says that Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy claimed that Finley is not yet ready or cleared to play and that comes after another report said that he failed his physical with the Seahawks and now he could end up somewhere else if he can get cleared. The Giants have also been linked with Finley and head coach Tom Coughlin said that the position is a major "question mark" for the team heading into the spring.
Pro Football Talk reported on Coughlin's comments at the owners meetings and right now the team comes in with just Adrien Robinson, Larry Donnell and Daniel Fells as the TEs on the roster. Robinson is considered a project player and he has not made any receptions in three games with the team while dealing with injuries, while Fells was a backup option with the Patriots. The team also has Donnell, but he has not done much, playing in 16 games and making just three catches for 31 yards and that type of production will not be good enough for the Giants.
McAdoo comes from Green Bay and the Finley connection could work there, but the team also could look for another tight end option, as McAdoo could start using the position more than Kevin Gilbride did over the past few seasons. Owen Daniels is a free agent and he could fit with the Giants after the 31 year old made 24 catches for 252 yards and three touchdowns last season in five games and over his career with the Texans he had 385 receptions for 4,617 yards and 29 TDs.
The draft could be very interesting, as the Giants pick at number 12 and Ebron could be available and he is one of the top pass catching tight ends in the draft, if not the highest rated with Amaro. Ebron is big and athletic and he is in the mold of a Jimmy Graham and he made over 60 catches last season for 973 yards and he could be a perfect fit for the Giants. Ebron is visiting with the Baltimore Ravens this offseason and they could go after him despite bringing back Dennis Pitta, while Amaro was very productive last season and he could be a target as well.
