The MLB standings for 2014 have some surprising teams at the top of the divisions in the AL and NL after just a handful of games, as the Seattle Mariners are 3-0 and leading the American League west division, while the LA Dodgers, Washington Nationals, Toronto blue Jays, Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox are division leaders.
The season is only a few games old, but already some teams have started to distance themselves from others in the division, including the Mariners, who started the season with a sweep of the Los Angeles Angels and that was in California. The Mariners came into the season with very high expectations and after signing Robinson Cano many felt they would struggle, but that has not been the case early on. The team is leading all offensive categories in the league for the most part and they are now 3-0 as they head to Oakland to play against the Athletics.
The Mariners open at home next week and right now fans are very excited, as Justin Smoak, Cano, Dustin Ackley, Mike Zunino and Felix Hernandez have all started the season well, while pitcher James Paxton was lights out in the final game against the Angels. The Mariners were picked by many to finish fourth, but a nice start could be huge for the unproven team.
The Blue Jays are in first place to start in the AL East after wins against the Rays, while the Yankees are 0-2 to start the season. The White Sox lead early in the AL Central and they have a lead with the Detroit Tigers in the division to start things off. The Mariners are first over the Astros in the West, while the NL East has the Washington Nationals back in first place for the time being.
The Pirates have started off well after making the playoffs last season and they lead the Cardinals for now along with the Reds. The West has the teams with the most games played, as the dodgers are in the lead overall with a 4-1 record over the Giants, while the Diamondbacks are already 1-4.
