The NY Jets have a number of needs heading into the draft and a trade up in picks for Mike Evans from Texas A&M is a potential option, while Geno Smith's future could be a bit in trouble after pre-draft visits from Logan Thomas and Jimmy Garoppolo and New York has also been looking at other receivers like Brandin Cooks, Marqise Lee, Odell Beckham Jr. and Kelvin Benjamin.
The Jets want to continue adding more skills position players and this comes after they signed Chris Johnson and Eric Decker in the offseason. Those two players are more than the team ever gave Mark Sanchez and they wonder why he didn't play so well and now they have the chance to add some more talent for Geno Smith and Michael Vick.
It says a lot about a team in the way they treat their quarterbacks and while Smith could be the future starter, you don't sign a player like Vick if you really think that's true. Vick will be the starter and Smith's future will be up in the air, as the Jets can easily draft a QB without having to pay him too much with the new rookie wage scale and names like Garoppolo and Thomas could be in the mix. Smith had some good flashes last season, but he was not great by any measure and now he could lose out if the Jets opt to draft a quarterback.
The Jets have the flexibility to trade up or down and basically do whatever they want in the draft, as they have 12 picks coming in and that is double the amount that some teams have. Yes, four of those are compensatory picks and that means the Jets can't trade those, but it gives them flexibility to move other picks and with so many selections, John Idzik really has some nice control coming in. The team has a number of major needs on offense and defense, but they already took care of some of that with Eric Decker and Chris Johnson signing as free agents along with Jacoby Ford.
Wideout is still an option along with running back, while the team may look at QBs later in the draft since this is such a deep class. The team picks at number 18 in the draft in the first round, but don't be surprised if they trade up to try and get someone like Mike Evans, who is predicted to be a top 10 pick. The Jets moved up to take Mark Sanchez and that didn't work out all that well, but now they could use some of their picks to trade up to try and get the receiver. Since this draft is deep, some teams could be willing to move back with the Jets.
The team has an extra fourth round pick from the Darrelle Revis trade as well as three extra sixth round picks they were awarded and they also have three fourth round picks, two of which they can trade and those are valuable when a draft is this deep.
