MLB Standings 2014: AL and NL Division Leaders As Baseball Schedule Into May With Wild Card Records

May 21, 2014 03:20 PM EDT

The MLB standings, division standings and Wild Card races in the NL and AL are starting to take form as the baseball schedule heads into the end of May and start of June and with a quarter of the season over, the Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles, Oakland Athletics, Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers and San Francisco Giants are the top teams in each division.

The Tigers, Athletics and Giants have been the best teams in baseball to start the season and they are leading the league in wins as the month heads into the back end. The Tigers have the biggest lead in any division, as they are six games up on the next closest team and it could be a runaway in the AL Central this year. The Orioles are the top teams standing in a close division, as no team has really played well yet and they lead the Yankees and Blue Jays by a half game, while the Rays and Red Sox are at the bottom of the division for now.

The Tigers expected more punch from the Indians after they made the playoffs last season, while the Royals have been a disappointment so far after having their first winning season in a decade last year. The Athletics once again have been great and they are leading the Angles by four games, while the Seattle Mariners have been one of the biggest surprises in baseball, as they are at .500 this late in the season for the first time in a decade. The Mariners are expected to get back their young pitching in James Paxton and Taijuan Walker soon and that could give them a great rotation with Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma, who won over the Rangers with his third straight start of eight innings and now he is 3-0 on the season.

The Braves are once again leading the AL East and they have a lead over Washington and Miami, while the Mets have nestled into their last place spot as well. The Central has the Brewers first over the Cardinals, while Cincinnati, Pitt and Chicago are in the bottom half of the division. The Pirates have been off to a slow start since making the playoffs last season, as are the Reds.

The NL west is shaping up to be the best division, as the Giants are leading over the surprising Colorado Rockies, while the LA Dodgers are in third place. It's obviously very early for the wild car races, but with the extra team in the playoffs, everyone that hangs around is in the mix and right now in the AL it's the Angels, Yankees and Blues Jays, with NY and Toronto tied for the second spot. The NL has the Rockies in with the Washington Nationals and Cardinals, with the latter two tied for the second spot.
