The French Open 2014 results over the weekend had some upsets, as Roger Federer lost to Ernest Gulbis at Roland Garros in the fourth round and now he is out before the quarterfinals for the first time at the French in a decade and now he is out of the major as names like Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Maria Sharapova advanced into the quarterfinals.
Federer had been into every Grand Slam quarterfinal for a decade until last year at Wimbledon and now the Roland Garros mark has fallen, as the last time Federer was out this early was back in 2004 after losing in the fourth round. Federer lost 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the fourth round and now the 17 time champion is out of the tournament and he has lost before the quarters in three of the past four major tournaments and now Gulbis will be looking to make a run at Roland Garros, but everyone is still chasing Nadal.
Federer is now out at 32 years old and he last won the 2009 French Open title when Nadal was out and he has lost four times to Nadal in Paris and he had nearly 60 unforced errors and was not his usual self at Roland Garros. Federer said he was disappointed with the result and that he did not have it on Sunday and now he is out of the tournament and Gulbis has the chance to keep things going after getting one of the biggest wins of his career. Federer is not the first big name to get knocked out of the tournament, as fellow countryman Stan Wawrinka lost and so did Li Na, Serena Williams and others on the women's side.
The draw now moves into the quarterfinals and Djokovic is through and he will play against Milos Raonic, while Tomas Berdych is through after winning over John Isner to eliminate the last American man at the tournament. Andy Murray and Fernando Verdasco are set in the fourth round and Murray could get through to the quarters, while Rafael Nadal has his next match on Monday to see if he will get through. Murray won 12-10 in the fifth set after his match was suspended the previous night.
