The MLB Draft 2014 is live online on Thursday for the first round and the live stream comers from MLB.com and the MLB network channel on TV as the First-Year Player Draft gets underway from Studio 42 in Secaucus and it begins at 7 pm ET and has Round 1, Round 2, compensation round and the Competitive Balance rounds and that comes before things pick up on Friday and into the weekend for the full 40 round of coverage.
The MLB has done a much better job over the past few years of getting the draft on TV and hyping things up and this year is no different, as teams like the Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, Seattle Mariners and NY Mets try and find the next Mike Trout or Miguel Cabrera. Houston has been the worst team in baseball over the past five years and they are number one for the third straight season, while the Marlins are ahead of the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins in the top five. The Mariners are next and they pick ahead of the Phillies, Rockies, Blue Jays and Mets.
Many of the players are alive in the NCAA Baseball tournament and are going to be playing in the College World Series eventually, although Michael Conforto, who is considered to be the best outfielder in the class, is not after his number one team in Oregon State got eliminated and now his next destination could be a team in the top 10. The Mariners have been linked to everyone in the top 10 picks and they pick at number six and one player that could be in the mix if he falls is Carlos Rodon from North Carolina State, but he likely will be gone by that pick.
Rodon has been struggling a bit this season and he came into the year as the presumptive number one pick and still could be. Other names to watch include Brady Aiken, Alex Jackson as well as Nick Gordon. Gordon has been tied to a number of teams and he could be a top five or even a top three pick at short.
The compensation picks come after the first round and that has the Royals, Reds, Rangers, Indians, Braves and Red Sox as well as the Cardinals in position to get players after losing free agents last offseason. The competitive balance picks come next and that has the Rockies, Marlins, Astros, Royals and some other teams in position to get some solid players as well. The second round has the Astros picking first again and they have a crazy plan for their major league team in place that is playing out in the AL West and they hope to be good in the next five years.
The Mariners have been in the top 10 for quite some time and a few years ago they had the number two pick behind the Nationals when they went after Stephen Strasburg and they ended up with Dustin Ackley. The team has made some solid picks over the years and some of those names are already in the bigs, including Brad Miller, Mike Zunino and Nick Franklin, who has bounced from the minors to the majors. The team has also done well with pitching, as they have Taijuan Walker on his way to the majors soon after completing a rehab assignment.
