MLB Wild Card Standings 2014: American League and National Leaders Records Into August 13

Aug 13, 2014 06:29 PM EDT

The MLB Wild Card standings are getting close in 2014 and right now in the American League it's the Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers, while the National League has the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals and both those teams are still alive in their division races and as August moves along, the wild card race should get -- dare we say -- wild.

The Kansas city Royals have been playing some amazing ball and they have pushed the Detroit Tigers out of the AL Central lead and into the second wild card. The Seattle Mariners have been nearly as good, going 7-1 in their past eight games and now they are in a virtual tie with the Tigers and are two games up on the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees are 2.5 games back in the wild card right now and the Indians are fading as well.

The National League wild card is closer with the two spots but that is a tough race, as the Cardinals and Pirates are leading by just a half game. The San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves are also in the mix and they are looking to pull things closer this week.

The division races are starting to really take shape and the Baltimore Orioles basically have the AL East locked up, as they now have the largest division lead in baseball. The team is six up on the Jays and they look like a lock, while the Tigers were once in that position and now have fallen out of first place in the AL Central. The Kansas City Royals have been hot and they now lead by half of a game.

The Oakland Athletics have been in the division lead all season and the LA Angels are close, but they are 3.5 back, while the Mariners are nine back. Seattle is in the second wild card now and they have been playing some great baseball as of late. The M's got another amazing start from Felix Hernandez and now he is on a great streak of 16 games with seven innings and two runs or less and he looks like he is heading to another Cy Young.
