The Boston Celtics may look at a Rajon rondo trade this year and teams like the LA Lakers, NY Knicks, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers and Sacramento Kings could be interested in making a deal and while the Celtics are not planning on dealing Rondo ahead of the season, he could be moved at the NBA trade deadline due to the fact that he is heading towards free agency and hasn't signed an extension yet.
The Houston Rockets and NY Knicks are expected to make strong pushes for Rajon Rondo in the summer of 2015 if he makes it to the market and while the Boston Celtics have so far rebuffed offers for the point guard, things could change once the season begins.
Rondo missed time last season after coming back from an injury, but he returned and played strong in 30 games after January and averaged 11 points and nine rebounds on a bad Celtics team. According to ESPN.com, the Rockets, Knicks, Lakers and Kings along with the Pacers have shown interest in Rondo at various times and they all could try and pull off a deal. Rondo may not want to sign an extension and that means these teams also have the chance to chase him as a free agent.
The Celtics have some major decisions to make as well, as teams will be calling them about Rondo and they have to decide whether to keep him and try to make moves themselves, or whether trading him is the right direction to go. According to ESPN.com writer Marc Stein, the Celtics will have interest from both the Houston Rockets and the NY Knicks about Rondo this offseason and if the Rockets want to make a deal, they likely will have to include some bigger names they have and that could be the main sticking point in any negotiation.
The Rockets and Celtics along with the Knicks also could be in play for Greg Monroe, as Stein writes in his season preview column that all three teams plan on making inquiries to see if Monroe is available and what he will cots if the Pistons decide to move him. While a trade may not go down this season, Stein writes that the calls and talks that are had during that time could be crucial to getting a deal done in the future. The Pistons could decide to move Monroe or the Celtics with Rondo at the trade deadline next year if they are out of the playoff race again and the teams that made overt efforts or started talks could be the first to get calls and that could lay the groundwork for a deal to get done.
Daryl Morey has shown that he is not afraid to pull the trigger on deals and he has been an outside the box thinker during his time with the Rockets and that is how the team cleared enough space for James Harden and Dwight Howard. The team may have to get creative again this time around, as they are looking at both Rondo and Monroe as potential options, but they need to clear more space before they can do that. The team already moved Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin and they have some other players they could package in the deal.
