The San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates are playing the NL Wild Card game on Wednesday night for the MLB playoffs and the matchup is on TV from ESPN and streaming live from the WatchESPN website past 8 pm ET as the National League postseason begins with Andrew McCutchen and Buster Posey matching up and the pitching duel has Madison Bumgarner against Edinson Volquez for the Bucs.
The Pirates come into the game after finishing the season with a win and they have the chance to advance to the NLDS for the second time in two years. The team won the wild card game at home last season after the fans at PNC Park roasted Johnny Cueto and now they have to deal with Madison Bumgarner. The Giants have been in the playoffs numerous times and have won the World Series recently and that experience will be huge against the Pirates, who are basically brand new to October.
Buster Posey comes in hitting extremely well during the last two months of the season and he could be the key for the Giants moving forward. Posey is leading the team in batting average, home runs and RBI this season and that makes him the player to watch on Wednesday night. The Pirates have last year's MVP in Andrew McCutchen and he comes in leading the team in runs, home runs and RBI this season and he will be the main player on Pitt to watch for this matchup.
Volquez has been dealing for about two months and that's how long Posey has been killing it and that is one matchup to watch out for. Posey has good numbers against him and the catches has two double and five hits in nine at bats and he will be one player the Pirates want to make sure doesn't beat them. Posey is also strong in the field and he will be keeping a watchful eye on players like the speedy Andrew McCutchen.
The Giants have won two of three World Series before last season and now they have the chance to try and get back and the Pirates will have to try and take down Bumgarner. This season Bumgarner has been fantastic on the road and that makes him very deadly right now, as he has gone 11-4 with a 2.22 ERA in his road games this season and he was tied with two pretty good pitchers for the lead in wins on the road and their names are Clayton Kershaw and Adam Wainwright.
