The NBA preseason schedule is live on Wednesday with a number of big games and some will be on NBATV for coverage and the NY Knicks will be in action against the Boston Celtics rom the XL Center in Hartford and this matchup opens the preseason for New York and starts a home and home with the two teams that of course will be played not at their home arenas and this is the debut for Carmelo Anthony and the new look Knicks.
The Knicks have Carmelo Anthony back and he is in on a five year deal and is the superstar in the center of the team. The Knicks also have a new head coach in Derek Fisher and they brought in Phil Jackson to overhaul everything and now expectations are high for the team heading into the season. Last year the Knicks started off 3-13 and were terrible for a while and that hole was too big for the team to climb out of. Mike Woodson was fired and now Derek Fisher will be in to take over and this is the first time he will be a head coach.
Phil Jackson wanted his own guy there and now Carmelo and company will be running the triangle and Phil knows it as well as anyone and so does Fisher. The team comes into this game after signing Anthony and making some trades in the offseason and now Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton are gone, while Jose Calderon will be the new point guard. That was a smart move for Jackson, as Felton was horrible last season and now Anthony has another player he can rely on in the offense.
The Knicks open the preseason with the Celtics and then the two teams will play against each other again on Saturday. That game will be from the Mohegan Sun Arena and this continues the NBA playing preseason games all over regional areas to get people to games who can't usually see NBA teams. The Celtics come into the season with tons of questions and they have Rajon Rondo missing out with a broken hand. Rondo is heading towards free agency and teams will be looking to sign him and one of those teams could be the Knicks come next summer.
Last season Anthony once again led the team in scoring and he comes back looking to finally get this franchise moving in the right direction. Two years ago everyone thought that was the case, but last season showed how tough things can be and now Jackson has the chance to put him mark on the team that he once played for. The Knicks ranked eighth in defense last season by points per game, but they were 20th in scoring and now Anthony needs to get some support off the rest of the roster.
The Celtics are in a hard rebuild and they have Marcus Smart and James Young coming in to make their pro debuts and those players could be the future names that Boston fans chant. Smart was a great lottery pickle for the Celtics and he could end up being the point guard of the future if Rondo leaves.
