Manchester United might have gone without a trophy last season, but that has not stopped the English Premier League club from topping the Forbes list of world's most valuable sports teams.

According to Forbes, United are worth $2.23 billion, 19 percent more than the second-placed team Real Madrid, which is worth $1.88 billion.

Manchester United have a host of big sponsorships, with Aon paying $31 million a year to put its name on the team's jerseys in a deal that runs through 2014.

Last year, DHL Express signed a four-year deal with the club worth a reported $62 million to sponsor Manchester United's practice jerseys; the first case of a practice jersey sponsorship deal for soccer in the UK.

Nike manages the team's merchandise sales and the agreement is worth a minimum of $39 million annually for Manchester United based on overall sales in a deal through 2015.

Barcelona, at $1.31 billion, are the next soccer team in 8th, while Arsenal went down three places to 10th with an estimated worth of $1.29 billion.

NFL teams dominate the top 50, with all 32 franchises making the cut. Dallas Cowboys leads the way, tying for third with the New York Yankees at $1.85 billion.
