Most fans might consider Lionel Messi to already be one of the greatest ever to play the game. But according to Argentine physio Fernando Signorini, the best is yet to come.

Messi is widely regarded as the best player in the world currently, with the 25-year-old already breaking record after record for his club Barcelona and winning three consecutive Ballon d'Or awards for player of the year. The only thing that stands in the way of Messi and true greatness is international success with Argentina.

Signorini, thinks Messi, 25, will reach his physical peak from this year and will "start to write history."

"Leo will reach his peak this year, starting this season," Signorini told Sport. "Regardless of everything that he has already achieved, he will now start to write history.

"Up till now, everything he has done was the result of his intuition and his desire to play. However, from now on the element of preparation will come into the equation as well.

"His choices will no longer be just based on his instincts, but also on his knowledge and experience.

"He will enter a new stage of his game. It's impossible to say where his limits lie. It's a mystery what he can achieve. Players like him are very rare.

"His best is yet to come."

Meanwhile, the president of Messi's old club Newell's Old Boys, hopes the Argentine wonder will finish his career in Argentina with them.

"We can watch him and dream that one day he will come back," Guillermo Lorente told Liga BBVA's website. "He is still very young; let's hope that one day he can return, to retire here, or to play here.

"He should. It should be an obligation for him."

Messi came up from Newell's youth ranks and was with the club from 1995-2000.
