One of Everton's most loved players, Tim Cahill, will join the likes of Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and Rafael Marquez at the New York Red Bulls.

In a shock move, Everton announced that a "nominal" fee had been agreed between Everton and Major League Soccer, paving the way for Cahill to leave Goodison Park after a stellar eight-year stint.

"Everton have agreed with Major League Soccer (MLS) that Tim Cahill can be transferred to the New York Red Bulls," a statement at the club's official website read.

"Tim, 32, will move to the Red Bulls for a nominal fee, subject to agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.

"He will travel to the U.S. in the next few days."

The Australian international, who was linked with a move to the Middle-East earlier in the summer, was a revelation at Everton after making his move from Milwall in 2008, scoring 68 goals in 278 appearances.

His performances earned such praise that, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger considered buying him a few years ago, but the Australian chose to stick with the Toffees, making him one of the club's best players in the Premier League era.

Everton have already strengthened for next season by signing Steven Naismith and the Toffees are close to sealing the signature of Steven Pienaar from Tottenham Hotspur. Despite that, it comes as a bit of a surprise that Cahill has been allowed to leave.

Although the 32-year-old did not have one of his best campaigns last season, Cahill has still been arguably the club's best and most consistent player for the last eight years, his name invariably the first one on the team-sheet of David Moyes.

Cahill, who has scored an impressive 24 goals in 55 games for his country, ended his career at Everton on a sour note, after seeing red in the final match of the season against Newcastle United, following a clash with French midfielder Yohan Cabaye.

However, all Everton fans and indeed the English Premier League supporters will remember him for all the hard-work, desire and professionalism shown by the Australian both on and off the pitch, making him one of the most respected players in the Premier League.
