Aston Villa and Southampton are playing live on the English Premier League schedule on Monday and the game from Villa Park starts up at 3 pm ET and will be on TV from the NBC Sports Network and streaming online from the NBCSN Live Extra website as things finish up and Southampton comes in near the top of the EPL table and looking to stay in contention.
Aston Villa is coming into the game down on the EPL table and they are 17th in the standings coming into this matchup. The team last played a draw with West Ham and before that was a loss against QPR and now they are really coming in struggling. The team has just five goals on the season and now the face off at home against a solid Southampton side and they will have two road games coming up after this before coming back home.
Southampton is in second place at the moment in the Premier League standings and while they cannot catch Chelsea and likely will not for some time, the team has the chance tp push ahead of Man City. Southampton has been playing well and they have the second best goal differential in the league this year. The team has only conceded five and that is less than half of what Chelsea has allowed and they have been scoring enough to keep things going.
The start for Southampton has been impressive and this has not been an expected start for the team this season. Southampton is ahead of Man City and Man United in the standings and they can keep pace with a win here and that could be big ahead of their next matchups. The next schedule of games could decide how Southampton ends up this season, as they have huge games coming up against the top teams in the EPL. Southampton will host Man City for their next matchup and after that they have to travel to play Arsenal. The team also has matchups with Man United and Chelsea coming up at home and late in January against Arsenal.
Those matchups will be huge for Southampton if they want to stay near the top of the table and with some of those teams chasing, this will be a prime time to pick up points. Morgan Schneiderlin, Dusan Tadic and Steven Davis likely will not play with injuries and that could keep the team down after they suffered them over the international break. Aston Villa needs to come out of the break strong, while Southampton comes in after winning 11 of 12 games in their matchups across all competitions.
Southampton has given up as many goals as Aston Villa has scored and that makes this a very one sided matchup. Southampton has won six of 32 matches at Villa Park, but they are coming in as the hotter team and they have won four times in the EPL of those six.
