College Football Playoffs: Oregon Ducks Win Over Florida State Seminoles In Rose Bowl For Semifinal Win and National Championship Game

Jan 01, 2015 11:00 PM EST

The College Football Playoffs started with the Oregon Ducks winning huge over the Florida State Seminoles in the Rose Bowl on Thursday, taking the victory on New Years Day 59-20 to snap the undefeated streak for FSU and quarterback Jameis Winston.

Marcus Mariota had a strong game for Oregon with 338 passing yards and two touchdowns, while the Ducks defense came through with multiple turnovers. The Ducks ended up pulling away big in the second half after scoring touchdowns on three turnovers and that was too much for Florida State to come back on. FSU had been behind in numerous games this season, but they were able to come back, but those teams were not Oregon and this time it was just too much.

Mariota was sharp and the Ducks offense was able to score six straight times in the second half and Jameis Winston couldn't put together enough magic to get the game close. Florida State is now out after winning 29 straight games and this is now the first game Winston will lose while playing in college. Winston had 348 yards and one very embarrassing play when he stumbled, fumbled and went down, allowing the Ducks to score a defensive touchdown.

The Ducks now head to the national championship game against the winner of Ohio State and Alabama and that will be in just over a week in Texas at AT&T Stadium. Thomas Tyner went for 124 yards in the game and scored two touchdowns, while Darren Carrington had two through the air on seven catches for 165 yards. Mariota now has the chance to win the national championship as a Heisman winner and Winston now likely heads to the NFL as a loser in his last game.
