The Buffalo Bills are coming into the 2015 season with questions at quarterback and names like Josh McCown, Mark Sanchez, Brian Hoyer and Jake Locker could be free agent targets, while Jay Cutler could be a trade option over EJ Manuel starting for Rex Ryan, while CJ Spiller is likely leaving in free agency and the NY Jets or Giants could be options for him.
The Bills come into the year after going 9-7 last season and they have a new head coach in Rex Ryan taking over for Doug Marrone. The team signed Richie Incognito and that was a controversial move, but Ryan said that he would be on a "short leash". According to Pro Football Talk, the team has met with Josh McCown and he could be a potential option for the team to sign in free agency. McCown appeared to be close to signing, but Adam Schefter reported that he wanted to keep his options open through the NFL combine before signing.
The Bills want to give Manuel more time to develop and they likely will look for a short term option this offseason. McCown is a target for the Jets and Cleveland Browns, while the Titans and Texans also could be interested. Sanchez has been mentioned in connection with the Bills, as many have speculated that he could reunite with Ryan after his time with the Jets. McCown is an option for all of those teams and he could be a nice fit in Buffalo to help Ryan turn things around in Buffalo.
Jay Cutler has been mentioned as a trade option for the Bills by Peter King at the MMQB, but right now there is no movement on a deal. King suggested that adding a player like Cutler could turn the Bills into a playoff contender and with the Patriots taking a decade long reign over the division, adding a player like Cutler could turn things around. According to ESPN.com, head coach John Fox was "noncommittal" about Cutler at the NFL combined and while that doesn't mean a trade will happen, it could be considered by the team.
The Bills ranked 18th in the league in passing yards per game last season and they would like to improve that a great deal. Ryan already has a stout defense that was ranked third in the league in rushing yards allowed per game, meaning he needs to get the offense up to snuff. Greg Roman comes in after working with the 49ers and if the team can get a legit quarterback, they could turn things around, as they have talented players like Fred Jackson, Sammy Watkins, Scott Chandler and Robert Woods.
CJ Spiller is a free agent and after he was injured this season, there is a good chance the Bills will let him walk in free agency. ESPN New York reports that the Jets could be a fit for Spiller, as he previously played under new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. The Jets let Chris Johnson go and they could look at adding Spiller, as he put up his best career numbers with Gailey leading the way, rushing for over 1000 yards and being effective out of the backfield as a receiver.
