The Seattle Seahawks have Russell Wilson coming into the final year of his contract and they may try and work out an extension this offseason and this comes as the team could target Brandon Spikes or Lance Briggs to help replace Malcolm Smith, while names like TJ Yeldon, Breshad Perriman, Melvin Gordon, Tevin Coleman and Jaelen Strong could be draft targets.
The news about Wilson and his potential contract extension has died down since February, but GM John Schneider said that it was a priority for the team. Schneider signed Marshawn Lynch to a new contract after he flirted with retirement and now it could be Wilson's turn to get a new deal. According to Adam Schefter at ESPN.com, Wilson could potentially get a fully guaranteed deal or close to it and the reason the Seahawks need to get a deal done is because Wilson does not have a fifth year option after being a third round draft pick. Players like Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin were first round picks and that is why they have fifth year options on their rookie deals. According to Ian Rapoport on Twitter, the Wilson deal could be up to 75 percent guaranteed.
ESPN Insider Mel Kiper Jr. writes that the team could look at a receiver in the draft this year and Breshad Perriman could be an option out of Central Florida. Perriman had 50 catches for 1,044 yards and nine touchdowns last season and could be an option as a mid-round pick. The team also could look at adding depth behind Lynch, as players like TJ Yeldon and Tevin Coleman are coming out. The Seahawks also have a need at linebacker with Malcolm Smith going to the Raiders and they could look at a veteran option like Brandon Spikes or Lance Briggs for depth.
The Seahawks came into the offseason with a major need on the defensive line at tackle and while there were some reports that Ndamukong Suh wanted to sign, the Seahawks never came close to working on a deal and with good reason. Suh wanted way too much money for what the Seahawks were looking for and they have now added someone else at the position, signing Ahtyba Rubin.
According to ESPN.com, Ahtyba Rubin has reached a one year contract agreement with the Seahawks after previously playing for the Cleveland Browns. Rubin has size at 6-foot-2, 325 pounds and he has been a solid run stuffer and he had 28 tackles in 13 games played last season. While Rubin is nowhere close to the player that Suh is, he serves a major need for the Seahawks and can help stop the run if the team doesn't bring back Kevin Williams.
Suh he got what he wanted, as Miami paid him the biggest contract for any defensive player in the NFL. Terry Blount at ESPN writes that the Seahawks may also look at releasing nose tackle Brandon Mebane to free up cap space. Suh was looking for at least $50 million guaranteed and deal near $100 million and while Lions president Tom Lewand said that he was confident that the team would sign back Suh, he got priced out. Suh signed a six year deal worth $114 million and it had $60 million guaranteed.
