Green Bay Packers Rumors: Wes Welker, Greg Jennings, Zach Miller Free Agent Options With Maxx Williams Draft Target At Tight End?

Mar 23, 2015 03:08 PM EDT

The Green Bay Packers made a strong move by keeping Randall Cobb this offseason and now Ted Thompson could look at some depth options on the market, as Wes Welker, Greg Jennings, Zach Miller and Hakeem Nicks are still available as free agents and this comes as the team may target a tight end in the draft, with players like Maxx Williams, Clive Walford and Nick O'Leary as potential options.

The Packers come into the offseason with few needs and after signing back Cobb, they are very strong at wide receiver, but there is a chance they could look for more depth. The team likes Davante Adams, but along with that, Mike McCarthy may want some more options and Ian Rapoport of NFL Media said on Total Access that Wes Welker could be a depth pickup. Welker likely would be a cheap option and since no other teams have shown interest, the Packers could take their time and see what develops.

The Packers have both Jeff Janis and Jared Abbrederis on the roster, but they are untested and the team could look at Welker as a fourth or fifth option for Aaron Rodgers. Welker was with the Broncos last season and dealt with some injury issues and so far this offseason he has had "no buzz" on the market, according to Pro Football Talk. Last season Welker had just 49 catches for 464 yards, which were his lowest totals since back in 2006. Welker put up some amazing numbers while playing with Tom Brady and in 2013 he had 73 catches for 778 yards while playing with Peyton Manning in Denver.

Welker would be a cheap option for the Packers and a low risk one at that and it would likely be a one year deal. According to ESPN Wisconsin, it's "unlikely" that Greg Jennings reunites with the Packers after his release from the Vikings, but the receiver said he would be open to coming back. According to Trey Wingo from ESPN, the Dolphins are looking at Jennings and could "talk with" him this week about signing. The team has also looked at Michael Crabtree and Hakeem Nicks this offseason.

The Packers may have some depth issues at tight end and they could look at names like James Casey or Zach Miller on the market. Jermaine Gresham likely would have been a target, but he underwent back surgery and that likely will keep the team from looking at him as a real option this season. Rob Demovsky covers the packers for ESPN and he writes that the team likely will look at the draft for potential options at tight end over free agent pickups.

According to Walter Football, Maxx Williams, Clive Walford and Nick O'Leary are some of the top prospects coming out along with Tyler Kroft and Jeff Heuerman. The Packers got rid of Brandon Bostick after his terrible mistake in the NFC championship game and while they have Richard Rodgers and Andrew Quarless, those two are mostly untested. The team may want to add some depth at the position and some of those draft prospects could be options in the later rounds.
