The Houston Texans could be in the market for a quarterback in the 2015 NFL draft even after signing Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett this offseason, as the team is bringing in Brett Hundley for a pre-draft visit and they also could be interested in Bryce Petty and this comes as Cameron Jordan could be a trade option after Jadeveon Clowney's injury issues.
The Texans came close to making the playoffs last year in the first season of Bill O'Brien taking over as head coach and heading into 2015 the team is expecting to be in the postseason. The team signed Brian Hoyer as a free agent and opted to bring back Ryan Mallett and now those two likely will battle to be the starting quarterback. The team drafted Tom Savage last year, but he needs more time to develop and that could lead O'Brien to add another young QB to the mix.
According to Pro Football Talk, the Texans are having a pre-draft visit with UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley and they also may bring in other QBs for workouts. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Texans are interested in Hundley, who had a solid season for the Bruins after coming into last year as a potential Heisman candidate. Hundley is an athletic quarterback and he could be a solid player to develop behind Hoyer and Mallett.
The team also could be interested in Bryce Petty, who had a strong run at Baylor after taking over for Robert Griffin III. The Texans have depth at quarterback already, but if last season proved anything it's that there is never enough depth at the position. The Texans had to use numerous players last year as the starter, including Ryan Fitzpatrick, Mallett, Tom Savage and Case Keenum. Mallett could be the long term option with Hoyer starting this year, but O'Brien may also want another player to develop.
Hundley is a dual threat and he comes in after throwing for 22 touchdowns with just five interceptions last season. Hundley threw for 3155 yards and completed nearly 70 percent of his passes last season and he finishes college with a 67 percent completion percentage and 75 touchdown passes. Hundley is not as much of a sure thing as players like Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, but he has athletic ability and he rushed for nearly 1800 yards in three seasons at UCLA while scoring 31 touchdowns.
Hoyer comes in after an up and down season with the Browns and he opened the year 7-4 before he was later benched down the stretch. Hoyer signed a two year deal and if he is the starter over Mallett, he likely will be considered a "bridge starter" for O'Brien. Mallett or Savage could be long term options for the Texans, while Hundley or Petty could be potential fits in the draft.
The team also could look at a trade with Cameron Jordan from the Saints, as reports have the defensive end on the trading block. According to SI.com, the Saints and Cameron have not been able to work out a contract extension and there is a chance he could be traded on draft day. With Clowney coming back from serious knee surgery, the team could look at adding Jordan in a trade after putting up over 20 sacks in the past two seasons.
