The NFL free agent market still has some notable players with James Jones, Reggie Wayne, Wes Welker, Chris Johnson, Pierre Thomas, Steven Jackson, Knowshon Moreno, Michael Vick, Brady Quinn, Jermaine Gresham, Joe Barksdale, Tarvaris Jackson, and Matt Flynn available and with the compensatory draft deadline coming to an end, teams may start signing more players in free agency.
With training camp and offseason workouts coming up, teams will be looking to fill out rosters and add depth and that could cause a spike in moves this week. According to Pro Football Talk, the deadline for adding free agents that count toward the compensatory draft pick formula ends on Tuesday, meaning more teams could be willing to add players.
The Patriots may bring in a quarterback to help backup Jimmy Garoppolo after Tom Brady was suspended, while Jermaine Gresham could get some attention from the Broncos or the Cardinals after those teams lost players to injury and retirement. Chris Johnson has come up in connection with the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears, while James Jones was released by the Raiders last week following the addition of Amari Cooper.
The running back class left on the market is a bit over the hill, but there are some players that could contribute to teams this season. Steven Jackson was let go by the Falcons after two up and down seasons, while Moreno comes in after dealing with a knee injury last year. Moreno had a career year with the Broncos in 2013 and he signed a one year deal with Miami last year and missed most of the season with an injury.
Thomas was let go by the Saints and he could be a potential depth option for teams, while Joe Barksdale has been getting some attention from the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars. The Patriots may look at adding a quarterback, but they may wait to see if Brady appeals his four game suspension for his role in the deflated balls incident during the AFC championship game. Vick, Flynn and Quinn are all available and the Patriots could look at adding one player to give them an option over the inexperienced Garoppolo.
The wideouts left on the market include Welker, Jones and Reggie Wayne, who was not signed back by the Indianapolis Colts. The Miami Dolphins had interest in Welker earlier in the offseason, but after drafting DeVante Parker, the team likely will not sign Welker. Jones could be a solid addition for teams after his one year with the Raiders, as he was tops on the team with 73 receptions and he added six touchdowns for Oakland. The Seahawks could be an option for a veteran, as they have some young players and just added Tyler Lockett at wide receiver with Doug Baldwin for Russell Wilson.
Many think the Cowboys will add a running back and Todd Archer at ESPN Dallas writes that Johnson could be a fit along with Jackson. The team already has Darren McFadden and while Jerry Jones said that they are "comfortable" with the RBs on the roster, the team could use some more depth. The Cowboys currently have McFadden, Joseph Randle, Lance Dunbar and Ryan Williams and they could look at adding another player to the mix.
