The Indianapolis Colts took Phillip Dorsett in the first round of the draft and now he could push to start with TY Hilton over Andre Johnson for Andrew Luck in 2015 after coming out of Miami and this comes as the team is preparing to have Tom Brady return from his suspension against them in the 2015 season if his four game ban holds.
The Colts made it to the AFC championship game last season and now Luck is hoping to get his team one step further in the playoffs in 2015. The Colts added Phillip Dorsett in the first round of the draft and while many draft experts expected the team to go defense, Indy now has another offensive option for Luck. According to Pro Football Talk, the move for Dorsett could be about the future of TY Hilton, as he is coming into the final year of his contract.
The Colts have shown no indications that they will let Hilton go, but with the NFL the way it is and contracts getting more expensive, the team could be looking to give themselves some insurance in case Hilton does leave. While some around the league have said that the Colts had other needs that should have been addressed, wide receiver is more of a need than it appears. Hilton is a starter along with Andre Johnson, but Johnson is 34 years old and while he can still be productive, he is past his prime.
The Colts have Vincent Brown, Griff Whalen, Donte Moncrief and Duron Carter on the roster and while the group is top heavy with Hilton and Johnson, if one player goes down, it could get weak in a hurry. The Colts are a passing team and now they have another explosive option in Dorsett, who averaged 24 yards per catch last season with Miami. Dorsett could push into the starting lineup past Moncrief as the third wideout if he performs well in training camp.
Dorsett put up strong workout numbers coming into the draft and he ended his career in Miami with 108 catches for 1860 yards and 10 touchdowns. Dorsett was not as productive as some other WRs taken in the draft, but he did not play with a great quarterback in any of his three seasons in Miami. Dorsett had just 36 catches last season, but 10 of those were for TDs and he averaged over 20 yards per catch on 871 receiving yards.
The Colts have Frank Gore taking over at running back and that should give Luck the consistent rushing game that he has been lacking since coming to Indianapolis. Hilton has been one of the best receivers in the league over the past three seasons, putting up 19 touchdowns, 214 receptions and over 3200 yards. Adding Dorsett should only open things up for Hilton and gives Luck another deep play target.
The Colts ironically will be the team that Brady faces once his suspension is over and that game will be in Indianapolis. The Colts of course were the opponent in the AFC title game and while Brady could see his suspension reduced on appeal, he currently is in line to return against the Colts on the schedule in October for the Patriots.
