The Houston Rockets have offered Jason Terry a free agent contract and he could return after the Ty Lawson trade for the team and this comes as James Harden has received a lucrative deal proposal from Adidas that could pay him $200 million, while the Rockets are hoping that Donatas Motiejunas will be healthy for training camp.
The Rockets made a deep run in the playoffs last season and while they did not make any major free agent additions, the team brought back Patrick Beverly and Corey Brewer on contracts. The team also re-signed KJ McDaniels and they think he has a bright future and could give James Harden a nice offensive sidekick. Beverley and Lawson will be at the top of the depth chart, but the Rockets may also add another veteran to the mix with Terry.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Terry has been offered a contract by the Rockets and while "negotiations are not yet complete," "it sounds like" Terry will be back. Terry comes in after playing in a reserve role with the Rockets and he stepped up when Patrick Beverley went down with an injury. Marc Stein reported after the Lawson trade that the deal would not stop the Rockets from signing Terry back, as the team gave up guard depth by moving Pablo Prigioni in the deal.
Terry played in 77 games last season and averaged a solid 7.0 points and 1.9 assists per game while shooting over 40 percent from the floor. Terry is 37, but he has planet of playoffs experience and he could be invaluable as a backup point guard again this season. Terry has had some interest from the Dallas Mavericks, but it appears that he will be returning to the Rockets on a deal. Beverley signed a four year deal with the Rockets and Lawson comes in after getting traded from the Nuggets. Those players will get the majority of the minutes at point guard, but Terry is a nice B or C unit option.
Lawson has had his issues off the court, but he was productive last season and could push for significant minutes alongside Beverley. Having Terry and Lawson in the mix gives the Rockets some insurance, as Beverley has been susceptible to injuries in the past. James Harden is reportedly looking at a big sum of money when it comes to sponsorships, as reports have Adidas looking to sign the Houston star to a deal/
ESPN reports that with Nike's deal coming up with Harden, Adidas has stepped in and has offered Harden a $200 million deal over $13 years. Darren Rovell reports that Nike has until the "end of next week" to match the offer "or lose him" and that could give Adidas a major star to build around moving forward when it comes to sneakers. Rovell writes that "incentives" could make the deal even more lucrative with Adidas.
The Houston Chronicle reports that the Rockets expect to have Donatas Motiejunas healthy in time for training camp this year. Motiejunas comes in after dealing with a back issue and he is expected to play a big role for the team behind Terrance Jones with Josh Smith now gone. Motiejunas comes in after averaging six rebounds and 12 points per game last season for the Rockets.
