The Boston Red Sox have acquired John Farrell from the Toronto Blue Jays after holding a couple of interviews with multiple potential candidates over the past few weeks.
Farrell comes over from Toronto where he was coaching the Blue Jays. As a manager he went 154-170 over two seasons of baseball.
Farrell also had the Red Sox in great conditions while he was their pitching coach, ranking in the top stats in MLB.
Many wonder if Farrell can bring winning back to Boston, although players respect him, it will take a lot more for the Red Sox to compete against the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and the Baltimore Orioles in the A.L. East.
Farrell is used to the rivalries however, so this gives him an advantage over any of the other managers that were being asked to take over the daunting job.
He was a member of the Terry Francona's coaching staff and many thought he would take over as manager after Francona was fired, but that was not the case.
In return, the Red Sox supposedly sent over short stop Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays.
It is the second time in consecutive years where the Red Sox find themselves in a trade not involving players directly. Last season, as their front office was situation around, they formed a package that sent over their former General Manger Theo Epstein. This time, however, they are the ones receiving the non-player.
John Farrell is well liked and respected by the Boston players, which was a problem with both Terry Francona and most recently, Bobby Valentine.
