Oct 22, 2015 12:32 AM EDT

The New York Mets have advanced to the World Series with a victory in Game 4 against the Chicago Cubs to sweep the MLCS 4-0 on Wednesday night. Daniel Murphy was named most valuable player for the National League Championship Series as the Mets advanced to the World Series for the first time since 2000 against the Yankees.

The Mets won 8-3 over the Cubs to sweep the series and Murphy continued his hot hitting by homering in six straight postseason games. Murphy went 4-for-5 in the game to bat .529 in the series and he was awarded the MVP for the NLCS. Murphy became the first player in major league history to hit a home run in six straight games.

The Mets did not trail in the series against the Cubs and the team took the lead in this game with a three-run home run from Lucas Duda. The Cubs needed a miracle to win the series and in this game they could not get much going against the Mets and ended up losing Game 4 after Jason Hammel started the game. The Mets had Steven Matz on the mound and the pitching was a major advantage for the Mets and continued to be so on Wednesday night.

Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom won the first three games of the series and now the Mets will await the winner of the Royals and Blue Jays in the ALCS. The Blue Jays won in Game 5 and now the series is 3-2 with Kansas City in the lead. The first game of the World Series is scheduled for Tuesday and will be at either Toronto or Kansas City after the American League won the All-Star game.

The Cubs have not been to the World Series since the 1940s and have not won a title since 1908 and now that streak will continue for another year. The game ended on a called third strike on Dexter Fowler from closer Jeurys Familia, who has been a key player for the Mets this season. Murphy set a record for home runs in consecutive games in the playoffs after being tied with Carlos Beltran with five coming into the game.

The Mets got contributions from a number of players, including Matz, who allowed four hits and one run before being replaced by Bartolo Colon. Duda had two doubles in the game, while Travis d'Arnaud added a home run. The Cubs added a home run from Kris Bryant late, but it wasn't enough to overtake the Mets and now Chicago will head home after playing in Wrigley Field later than ever before. The Mets now advance to the World Series for the first time since losing to the Yankees in 2000.
