For Philadelphia Phillies fans this might not be anything new. The Phillies are rumored to having targeted some of the top free agent outfielders on the market
B.J. Upton is their main target, but General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said they wouldn't mind offering guys like Angel Pagan and Michael Bourn a deal. Heck, they might even bring back Shane Victorino.
The Phillies parted ways with both Victorino and Hunter Pence, leaving huge vacancies in their outfield.
Acquiring a guy like Upton would bring youth, speed and power.
In the past six seasons in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, Upton averaged close to 20 homers, 70 RBI and about 36 stolen bases.
However, his biggest weakness is strikeouts, which has affected his batting average greatly. You can't place Upton at the top of the lineup because of his high strikeout ratio. In each of the past six seasons he has, minimum 134 strikeouts with as many as 169 in 2012.
His batting average takes a toll and hangs around the .240 mark. However, his power is increasing year after year.
So if you're the Phillies you take everything into consideration and find out how Upton can fit in your team.
The other two guys of interest, well, one just won a world championship and the other is a reknowned thief on the base pads.
Pagan, who spent his 2012 season with the San Francisco Giants, has speed and is great on defense. He had 15 triples with a .288 batting average and can energize a team when he flashes the leather.
Bourn just finished a full season in Atlanta where he stole 42 bases for the Braves. He is also an excellent defender as his main game is speed, which helps him on both offense and defense.
The Phillies will look to bounce back in 2013 after a .500 finish with an 81-81 record. Many counted them out early, but as they got healthy throughout the season, many thought the Phillies would be capable of making a comeback.
Some new blood that can charge the spirits of the clubhouse wouldn't be bad for this team as they will look to keep pace with the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves.
