David down and Dickey to go. David Wright signed a seven-year extension that will allow the six-time All-Star to remain with the New York Mets. The deal is worth, a Mets record breaking, $122 million surpassing the contract of Johan Santana.
Together with the $16 million Wright will receive in 2013, he will become the highest paid Met in team history.
The extension comes about two days after Wright declined a six-year deal worth $100 million.
The Mets went back and forth throughout the 2012 season as Wright's contract situation received more press. It was either extend him or possibly trade him.
However, the Mets front office knew that trading Wright wouldn't boast well with fans, especially if he had a great year somewhere else and found himself in Citi Field for the All-Star game in another uniform.
Don't know if they actually took that into consideration, but they kept him.
Wright becomes the second Met currently in a long term contract. The team is trying their best to clear payroll as Sandy Alderson continues to clean up the mess left by Omar Minaya.
Jonathan Niese is the other Met signed to a multi-year deal. He is signed until 2016 with team options in 2017 and 2018.
Now, the final decision the Mets have to make is whether to sign R.A. Dickey or trade him for assets.
The team could use a catcher and outfielders. Alderson definitely wants to address those issues.
At least for now, Mets fans know they have a possible All-Star they can go see and he will be there for a very long time.
