Robert Griffin III Rumors: Dallas Cowboys, Eagles, Texans, Browns Options With Redskins Release?

The Washington Redskins and Robert Griffin III are expected to part ways this offseason. If Griffin is released, teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns could be potential landing spots for quarterback.

Griffin spent most of the season inactive as the third string quarterback for the Redskins and now it's likely the team will move forward with Kirk Cousins as the starter. Cousins is hitting free agency and the team is expecting to sign him to a long term deal or use the franchise tag to keep him in Washington.

Griffin has a $16 million option for next season and it is highly unlikely that the Redskins will pay him that salary. General manager Scot McCloughan spoke with the Washington Post about the quarterback situation and he said that he was in no rush to make a decision on Griffin. McCloughan said Griffin is a "really good football player" and that he has until March 9 to speak with coaches and evaluate the situation before a decision is made.

McCloughan is likely just keeping his cards close to his vest, as it has been an open secret all season that the Redskins are preparing to move on from Griffin. Cousins had a strong season and led the Redskins to the playoffs and he is the quarterback that head coach Jay Gruden wants to move forward with. Griffin is young and still has the potential to be a starter, but that likely will not happen in Washington.

Earlier in the season NFL.com reported that the Eagles, Cowboys, and Texans could have interest in Griffin if he is released by the Redskins. The Cowboys are likely to address the backup quarterback position this offseason and Griffin could be a potential option to bring in behind Tony Romo. The report came out while Chip Kelly was still with the Eagles, but even with Doug Pederson now taking over, Griffin could remain a potential target.

The Texans used four different starters last season and will be looking to bring in some competition for Brian Hoyer and Griffin could be an option. The Browns are likely going to draft a quarterback this year with Johnny Manziel all but done in Cleveland, but Griffin also could be a fit for Hue Jackson. The Redskins have Cousins and Alfred Morris hitting the market this offseason and it's likely that the team will let Morris test the market. Morris and Griffin helped the team make the playoffs a few years ago and when the 2016 season starts there is a good chance both players will be out of Washington.
