The New York Mets are still debating on keeping or moving R.A. Dickey. The knuckleballer continues to attract teams around the league and the Toronto Blue Jays are at the top of that list.
Let's get this out of the way right now, the Mets want prospects. Don't even think about asking for Jose Bautista, They want players they can mold and possibly keep in the outfield for years to come.
One guy that is attractive in the Blue Jays' roster right now is Anthony Gose. He is 22-years-old and played his first season in the majors in 2012.
Gose is a lefty who hit .223, one home run, drove in 11 and swiped 15 bases in 189 plate appearances. He played more right field than any other position starting 21 games there, 15 in center and 13 in left field.
He's versatile. He's young and could be under club control until 2019.
The Blue Jays would not mind sending the yongster to New York for Dickey, but the trade doesn't seem balanced from their Mets' behalf. They are giving up the 2012 Cy Young Award winner.
I would throw in Raja Davis in the deal as Gose ripens in the minors.
Davis, 32, doesn't hit for average, but when he gets on base the man can run. He has been at the top of the league for bases stolen.
He swapped 46 bases in 2012 and in 2010 he ha 50. The Mets don't have power in their lineup, so small ball will be key in 2013. Davis could be a table setter. However, his .257 batting average doesn't make him an ideal leadoff hitter. I would place him somewhere at the bottom. Once the lineup flips he can be at second or third base for the guys at the top of the order.
Davis would be under team control until the end of the season as he will be a free agent in 2014. By that time, Gose could be ready to become an everyday player as he would spend most of 2013 in the minors.
In 2014, the Mets should be bidding for the top guys in the market. If they don't feel comfortable with Gose as an everyday player, then they have the money to acquire players to play in their outfield.
As for the Blue Jays, they can throw Emilio Bonifacio in the outfield as he is currently being looked as a backup for Maicer Izturis.
The Mets are delaying negotiations with Dickey as he is looking for a two-year $26 million contract extension.
