Manchester United News: Robin Van Persie Happy to Win Game in 'Romantic Way'; Wayne Rooney Hails Great Victory over Rivals City

Manchester United forward Robin Van Persie would have been happy to just pick up a win against Manchester City, but was glad it ended perfectly for him by scoring the winner, and ensuring three points in a "romantic way."

A Wayne Rooney double put United 2-0 ahead, before Yaya Toure and Pablo Zabaleta equalized for City. Van Persie, though, netted the winner through a freekick in stoppage time.

"Anything will do, just to win," the former Arsenal striker told Sky Sports. "We had a really good start because of Wayne, two really good clinical finishes, good attacks and then we were in control.

"City always come back, so we knew that, and it's a really special way to end the game -- with the three points in a romantic way."

Van Persie and Rooney had a discussion before the former swung a freekick that took a deflection of Samir Nasri on the way to nestling in the bottom corner. "Wazza asked me: 'What are you going to do? Are you going to shoot or cross it?' I said: 'I think I'll have a shot,'" Van Persie revealed.

And Rooney had no doubts about the fact that his strike partner would come up trumps just when it was necessary.

"It was obviously a difficult angle, but a player of Robin's ability... we work on that together at the training ground," he said. "I had no doubt he could score from there and thankfully he's won us the game."

Rooney admitted it felt special to get one over their Mancunian rivals, after City inflicted two defeats on United in the English Premier League last season.

"It's a great day for us, to go six points clear and beat our greatest rivals, especially after what happened last year," Rooney said.

"We've waited a long time for this to happen and I'm sure everybody at the club, all the fans... we know how much it means to them and we're delighted.

"We're going to celebrate. They've had a great record here and to spoil that is a great feeling."

Rooney was glad to see his side eke out a win in the last minute in a season which has seen United pull off one dramatic win after another.

"To be fair it's been like that all season," Rooney said with a smile. "To lose a two-goal lead... to be fair we were hanging on a little bit at the end. They had a couple of chances, but a bit of magic got us the three points."
