There is nothing quite like Twitter to send your pulses racing into overdrive when it comes to transfer rumours. The latest talk to do the rounds on the Arsenal front is the fact that Arsene Wenger has put in a bid of £30 million ($48 million) for a striker.
Arsenal are not one to spend large amounts on a single player, particularly in January, but according to GeoffArsenal, a reliable source on Twitter, the Gunners have stepped up their pursuit of a forward, although the name of the player in question could not be gathered.
That tweet lit a spark that has become a full-on fire, with Twitter and Arsenal forums debating on who the player could possibly be, with the majority of the people, with the "inside sources," claiming it to be Edinson Cavani or Gonzalo Higuain.
Arsenal fans have been screaming for a dream signing since time immemorial, while having to watch painfully as their beloved team drop their standards seemingly with every passing season.
Wenger repeatedly insisted the financial restrictions at the club no longer exist, and said he would be ready to splurge on top-quality, "exceptional" players.
Cavani and Higuain certainly come under that bracket.
Just like there was the hope that Pep Guardiola would take over from Wenger at Arsenal, Cavani represents the player aspect of that hope. Guardiola, of course, signed with Bayern Munich, although a move to the Gunners, when his contract expires in three years cannot now be ruled out.
Most of that will depend on where Arsenal are in 2016 - whether they are still stuck competing for a top-four place, or whether, guided by the brilliant Jack Wilshere, they are back among the elite in European football, competing for all the major trophies on offer.
One man can certainly change the course of that, and tilt it towards the latter. Cavani will not leave Napoli in January, so the chances of Arsenal completing a signing in the winter window are slim at best.
However, the striker is open to a move in the summer, and nothing if Arsenal are ready to pay the money, wages included, to go along with a trophy at the end of the season, there is definitely a chance that Cavani might wear the Red and White of Arsenal.
Higuain is another player, who has been linked with a Premier League move for quite some time now. The Real Madrid forward is second choice currently at the Bernabeu, and if Radamel Falcao switches teams in Madrid, there is a good chance that the Argentine international will be put up for sale in the summer.
The £30 million fee is more apt for Higuain than Cavani, with the Napoli forward expected to be much more expensive. However, opening bids are always made low to test the waters, and Wenger, for once, might just be ready to play the big-money game in his bid to bring back success to the confines of the Emirates.
So, will it be Edonson Cavani or Gonzalo Higuain, or even a completely different player?
